Athletics Series
Safaricom Athletics Series features a line-up of nine long distance races and three track and field events...
Over the last decade or so Safaricom has invested close to KES 1 billion in various athletics events, and has for the last three years brought these events together under the banner of the Safaricom Athletics Series. Launched in 2013, the Safaricom Athletics Series aims to transform lives through sports, using sporting events to bring communities together while at the same time identifying and nurturing new talent. In 2015 we held 18 races in different parts of the country. These races – ranging from community races to marathons and track and field events – have given us an opportunity to witness firsthand the amount of sporting talent that Kenya is blessed with.
Through them we have also seen the opportunity for more young men and women from all over the country to realise their dreams of excelling in sports, and remain committed to providing a platform from which they can launch their careers and receive valuable training as they seek to represent Kenya at the highest levels of sport. By working closely with our partners – Athletics Kenya, Deaf Athletics Association of Kenya and the National Paralympics Committee – we have developed a strong athletics calendar that has resulted in local training opportunities for our athletes, who are using various races to prepare for international meets.
These local events have played a key role in shortlisting talent for Team Kenya, which has gone ahead to perform remarkably well at global events most recently at the 2016 Olympics and Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
