Inaugural Safaricom Academy Masters Class Graduates
April 30, 2013… The first group of 89 students has successfully completed their studies at the Safaricom Academy based at the Strathmore University. The Safaricom Academy is a 2 year Masters degree in Master of Science in Mobile Telecommunications and Innovation (MSc MTI) degree
Launched in 2010, the Master of Science in Mobile Telecommunications and Innovation (MSc MTI) degree is the only Masters course in the country designed specifically to meet current and emerging global telecommunications needs. It is based on a curriculum that was developed jointly by the leading integrated communications service provider Safaricom Limited and Strathmore University.
So far, the Academy has admitted a total of 142 students out of which 112 have received full sponsorships from Safaricom worth Kshs. 677,900 each. The Telco has so far spent over Kshs.90million to facilitate the course.
Speaking during a Pre-Graduation ceremony, Safaricom's Chief Executive Officer Bob Collymore said the graduates will be expected to lead in innovation and the adoption of technological advancements that provide solutions to the challenges that the country faces.
"The Safaricom Academy provides apps developers and IT students with a unique opportunity to marry their talent with the relevant educational know how therefore equipping them with the necessary skills to address emerging challenges in the job market. We intend to continue supporting this programme, with a long term view of creating a critical mass of highly skilled telecommunications specialists in Kenya," said Bob Collymore, CEO-Safaricom Limited.
Strathmore University Vice Chancellor Prof. John Odhiambo while congratulating the outgoing class said, "This programme is consistent with Strathmore University's Vision, Mission and Values. We are proud to have partnered with the market leader in the telecommunications sector. The successful completion of this programme by the first 89 students is a testament that we are on to a good start in positioning Kenya as the ICT hub for the continent."
These are the first three classes of graduates in this market-driven and academically-grounded training. We have two other classes and we intend to continue having annual sponsored intakes, with a long term view of creating a critical mass of highly skilled telecommunications specialists in Kenya
