Songa by Safaricom Presents: A Boy from Tandale

Tanzania’s Diamond Platnumz partners with Safaricom to launch album in Nairobi

SONGA by Safaricom has partnered with top Tanzanian performer Diamond Platnumz for the launch of his latest album: ‘A boy from Tandale’, which will be unveiled at an exclusive event to be held at the Kenya National Theatre in Nairobi today.

“This 18-track album is a tribute to my humble beginnings in Tandale, which is a slum in Tanzania. It is where I was raised, with a lot of challenges, but also where I formed my closest bonds with family and friends who to this day remain my support system. It is the place where amidst all the poverty, I discovered my talent,” said Diamond Platnumz.

The album, which will be available on the SONGA platform from Friday this week, features guest appearances from fellow Tanzanian vocalist Vanessa Mdee, Grammy Award winning reggae band Morgan Heritage, American stars Rick Ross, Omarion and Ne-Yo and Nigerian songbird Tiwa Savage, among other African artists.

Diamond, who has been dubbed the “King of East African Pop,” enjoys a large fan base in Kenya, and plans to feature Grammy Nominated R&B artist Omarion when he takes the stage this evening.

“We are pleased that Diamond has chosen to show his appreciation of Kenyan fans by not only launching his album in Nairobi, but also partnering with one of the strongest Kenyan brands to celebrate all the work that has gone into putting this record together,” said Sylvia Mulinge, Director – Consumer Business, Safaricom.

“When we launched SONGA just over a month ago, we promised to deliver the latest African hits to music fans, and to honour our own music talent by availing a wide catalogue of African music on the app. This launch is a show of our commitment to doing exactly that, as we seek to transform SONGA into the music streaming platform of choice,” said Ms. Mulinge.

SONGA by Safaricom is an all-inclusive music streaming service offering a wide variety of music to consumers via a mobile app for Android devices. The app curates, codifies and classifies vernacular, local music and a world class international music catalogue with over two million songs from over 400,000 artistes.

It also features a platform for artistes to sell their music and provides one-touch access to music across all major genres, giving subscribers variety of choice and affordable convenience.

Local artists whose music is available on the app include: Sauti Sol, Mercy Masika, Nyashinsky and Eric Wainaina, among others. The expansive catalogue also includes international artists such as Wizkid, Camila Cabello, Usher, Chris Brown, Beyoncé and Davido, and will soon feature even more music following the conclusion of agreements with major international and regional labels and aggregators including Sony Music Entertainment, Africori, Africha, Ngoma and Expedia.

SONGA by Safaricom offers online and offline play, track and full album downloads, playlist creation and an ability to share links with other subscribers, with customers enjoying the freedom to choose a subscription plan that suits them for KES 25/= a day, KES 150/= weekly or KES 499/= monthly.

The launch of the app emphasizes Safaricom’s commitment to growing the Kenyan music industry. Safaricom runs the country’s biggest ring back tunes service – popularly known as Skiza – and last year paid out over KES 1.4 billion in revenues to artistes.
