Safaricom Unveils Kshs. 23 Million Safaricom Athletics Series

Introduces Kshs. 1 million jackpot for AK sponsored races 

Nairobi, May 29th, 2013… Leading integrated communications service provider Safaricom Limited has today unveiled a Kshs. 23 million sports initiative dubbed the Safaricom Athletics Series. 

The newly launched Series will be the umbrella banner under which the Telco will henceforth run all its athletics properties. The Safaricom Athletics Series will host a mixed portfolio of athletics events which will include 8 AK sponsored competitive races and 6 community based events. 

The Telco further announced an introduction of a Kshs. 1 million jackpot for the AK races which will be split into Kshs.400,000 for road races and cross country events and Kshs. 600,000 for the half and full marathons. The prize money will be shared equally between the male and female winners. 

Each team will have four partners and will compete in these races, earning points against the time they complete the races and the winners will be those who complete the full circuit within the shortest time set in total.

The Safaricom Athletics Series will feature events managed in partnership with Athletics Kenya, Axis Marketing, DAAK- Deaf Athletics Association of Kenya, Henry Wanyoike Foundation, Tegla Loroupe Peace Foundation and KASS Media Group. 

The events that will be managed under the newly launched initiative are the Madoka Half Marathon, Mombasa International Marathon, Kisumu City National Marathon and the Kisii Half Marathon all under AK. Also under AK are the Ndalat Gaa Cross Country event, the Gusii Golden Series, Imenti South Road Race and the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Memorial Road Race. 

The Iten Road Race and Kericho Great Run by Axis Marketing, DAAK Deaf Track and Field National Championships by Deaf Athletics Association of Kenya, Henry Wanyoike Hope for the Future Run by Henry Wanyoike Foundation, the Kapenguria 10 km Peace Road Race by the Tegla Loruope Foundation and the KASS Marathon by KASS Media Group are the other events Safaricom is sponsoring under the new banner.
