Safaricom To Gives Kes 2 Million Sponsorship To 2016 Ndalat Gaa Cross-Country
Safaricom has today announced a KES 2 million sponsorship that will go towards preparations for the Ndalat Gaa Cross-Country to be held in Nandi County, on 15th October 2016.
The event, which is in its 8th year, will be held in honour of its founder and former Athletics Kenya President, the late Isaiah Kiplagat.
“This event has grown significantly over the last seven years. We appreciate the support of our sponsors, partners and athletes who have taken part in the race, which is quickly becoming one of the most anticipated athletics events in Nandi County,” said Kennedy Tanui, Organising Secretary of the event.
“We are committed to carrying on the legacy of our race founder by ensuring that the effort he put into making this event a success continues to have impact for many years to come,” he added.
Safaricom Ndalat Gaa Cross-Country is the 7th race in the 2016 Safaricom Athletics Series, in the long distance races category. As one of the biggest athletics events in the Rift region it traditionally attracts a large number of participants from all over of the country, with about 5,000 athletes expected to take part in front of a 30,000-strong spectator crowd.
“Our history with this event dates back to the year 2008, when we sponsored the inaugural cross-country to the tune of KES 300,000. Since then the event has grown significantly from the 200 athletes who participated eight years ago. I’m also proud to say that as the event has grown so has our sponsorship, and I believe that this reflects the growing importance of the race not just to the community, but to Safaricom as a great supporter of athletics in Kenya,” said Victor Ngumo, Head of Regional Sales and Operations for Nairobi West – Safaricom.
Unlike the other races in the Safaricom Athletics Series there will be no advance registration for the Ndalat Gaa Cross-Country. The total prize money has been set at KES 2 million, with this year’s top 20 participants set to receive cash prizes.
The event boasts a selection of high achieving alumni, including Asbel Kiprop, Prisca Jeptoo, Agnes Tirop and Olympian Conseslus Kipruto – who has confirmed participation in this year’s race.
Other upcoming races in the series this year include, Madoka Half Marathon (Wundanyi), Safaricom Imenti South Road Race (Meru) and the Safaricom Kisumu County Half Marathon (Kisumu).
