Madoka Half Marathon Receives Kshs.2 Million Boost From Safaricom

Nairobi, October 12th 2015… Safaricom Limited has today announced a Kshs. 2 million sponsorship for the 10th Edition of the Madoka Half Marathon, set to take place on 17th October in Wundanyi, Taita Taveta County.

While making the announcement, Safaricom Head of Brand Experience Zaheeda Suleman said Safaricom was fulfilling its commitment to supporting an event that has continued to propel the growth of athletics in the coastal region.

“This is part of our continued investment in athletics, one of the biggest sports in this country. Through the Safaricom Athletics Series we aim to make a positive contribution to sports in Kenya and to transform the lives of budding athletes by giving them a platform to display their skills, and are pleased to have raised this year’s sponsorship to Kshs.2 million up from last year’s sponsorship of Kshs.1.5 million,” she said.

This year over 1,500 athletes from different parts of the country are expected to take part in the event, which will have different categories including a 21km race, 10km race, veterans and school team races.

Madoka Half Marathon Chairman and Founder, Rtd. Major Marsden Madoka, said the event that kicked off 10 years ago has continued to grow and not only attracts local athletes, but has over the years become a calendar event in national athletics.

“What we started 10 years ago as a small event has grown to become one of the key events in the athletics calendar. The race has had a positive impact on this region by promoting community integration and harmony and also giving local athletes a stage from which they can make a name for themselves,” said Rtd. Major Madoka.

Last year, the Madoka Half Marathon title was won by Justus Kagongo in a time of 1:16:15, with Eunice Kioko taking the lead in the Women’s category with a 1:16:04 win.

The event is one of the 14 long distance races under the banner of the Safaricom Athletics Series 2015 edition.
