Leonard Barsoton & Mercy Maros Win the 5th Edition of Safaricom Iten Road Run

Saturday 02nd August 2014…   Leonard Barsoton and Mercy Maros emerged winners of the 5th edition of Iten Road Race held in Iten Elgeyo Marakwet County
Leonard led the men category to finish the 10km run in a time of 29:51:39 followed by Cyprian Kotut in a time of 30:00:19 with Wilfred Kimitei finishing 3rd in a time of 30:11:71

Mercy Maros led the female’s line up to finish at a time of 34:45:10.Alice Aprot &Gladys Chesire finished 2nd and 3rd respectively in a time of 34:51:00 & 34:59:90
The race which was flagged off by world record holder Wilson Kipsang saw over 400 participants take part in a race that is billed as one of the main athletic events in the Rift Valley region

 “Today’s race is one of the key events in this region and we are delighted that there is increase in the number of participants every year, We are happy that  the race has lived to its expectations and we hope the numbers will be even higher next year,” Said Angeline Sonje, Safaricom sponsorship coordinator.

The race which received sponsorship of Kshs 800,000 from Safaricom was also graced by former world marathon champion Lorna Kiplangat among other upcoming athletes in the region.

After Iten, Safaricom Athletics Series will move to Kisii half Marathon, Mombasa international Marathon, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Memorial race - Bondo, Kebirigo Road Race, Ndalat Gaa Cross Country, Madoka Half Marathon - Wundanyi, Tegla Loroupe Peace Race - Kapenguria, KASS Marathon - Eldoret, Imenti South Road race - Nkubu and Kisumu National Marathon - Kisumu.
