Safaricom is advancing a strategic shift from telecommunications to becoming Africa’s leading purpose-driven technology company by 2030, focusing on technology for social and environmental good. Safaricom’s alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) underscores its commitment to innovation, resilience, and partnerships to enhance impact and sustainability.
Key achievements over the past year include the implementation of 5G infrastructure across 43 counties in Kenya, providing high-speed internet to underserved areas. The company also supports financial inclusion through the Hustler and Women Enterprise Funds, reaching over 22 million Kenyans. Its Ethiopian operations now cover 40% of the population, with over 9.4 million customers and 4.5 million M-PESA registrations, driving economic empowerment.
Safaricom is dedicated to becoming Net-Zero by 2050, aiming to solarise 5,000 network sites by next year, expanding renewable energy use, and promoting a circular economy approach. Its ambitious projects include planting five million trees by next year and training engineers in Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) best practices in partnership with Nokia and Huawei. The company’s transformation strategy is grounded in four sustainability pillars: Shared Value, Planet, Responsible Business, and People. Through these, Safaricom addresses climate change, waste management, and energy efficiency, all while fostering an inclusive culture that prioritizes diversity, with a target of 5% representation of Persons with Disabilities (PwDs).
Safaricom also aims to empower Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and continues leveraging its M-PESA and MyCounty app to modernise service delivery, enabling 47 counties in Kenya to streamline operations. Looking forward, Safaricom is investing in artificial intelligence to enhance its services and exploring digital solutions for societal needs, focusing on sectors like health, education, and the environment.
